But this network abused badly to distribute malware and viruses in the name of “free” copyrighted contents. The worst thing is, many people download those malware and viruses in the name of free content and cry for loss.

Thus, make good use of torrent, it is safe to download free stuff which are not copyrighted. Many open source projects use torrents to share their contents to save their hosting fees. In conclusion, it is safe, if you use it safely.
